SOFTBALL SOFTBALL I LOVE SOFTBALL! LOVE FOR THE GAME This is all for the love of the game The girls on the bench, began to sing. The pitcher on the mound, took her place, And got a lop-sided grin on her face. I looked at the coach, as the signals started to come, I watched them go by, one by one. She needed a single, that was it, Nothing fancy, just a hit. I got so nervous, I don't know why, it was just a game, not a guy. I took a deep breath and watched the ball fly, Heard the crack of the bat, and said good-bye. The shortstop fielded it and made her throw, I concentrated on the base, I couldn't be slow. I couldn't let my team-mates down, couldn't bear my coach's frown.I beat the ball, I knew I was there, so when I was called out, I cried out in despair. I wanted to yell and let him see, just how much this hit meant to me. I needed to prove to myself that I was good, I needed to know that I could. Striking out left you not the same. But I guess this is all for the love of the game. Am I going to score, or am I too late? Running with no fear, just that crazy look on my face, I slide into home with the dirt rising to my face. Standing in the batter’s box, Thousands of thoughts, My knees shaking, I am a bomb ready to explode! My eyes locked on the pitcher, Like an eagle seeking its prey. Is this going to be a hit? Is it going to be the best of the day? I’m waiting and ready at third, My infielders all around, ready for the play. The determined look in their eyes, all on alert. Sweat dripping from our faces, falling to the dirt. Our bloody swollen fingers, bruised arms and legs, The scarred knees that will never ever go away, Pain isn't on our minds, It’s the pride and memories that last forever. Bruised, bloody, broken, All for this sport, I’ll never hold back. I play it, live it and love it. Softball - my sport, my game, my life. A True Love for The Game and instead of throwing down her helmet angrily, goes and ask what she did wrong so that she can do it right the next time. Unlike others on the team, she, eager and ready for practice, comes a bit earlier than the others, and may stay after even a long practicefor extra help or tips. She seems to learn quickly, but it's not that she's smarter. It is the extra practice and work she does. Even when no one knows about it. When there is no team practice, just for extra practice. She seems happiest when on the field. And rejoices in not only her own,but her team mate's achievements. Whenever a person makes a bad play and is discouraged, she brings up a good play that that person made earlier. She listens to the coach with interest in her eyes, not bored and uninterested. She'll take advice and use it to her advantage, takes extra time to learn plays, signals and situations. She may not be the fastest, strongest or biggest, but she tries her best, runs her fastest, uses the strength she has . Not boastful or prideful but a true sport Willing to help another player. She dreams of being the best, and works and strives for it instead of waiting for it to just come.I t can be called determination, sportsmanship, and many other names. It is "A True Love for The Game." -M. Megan Smart

PRAYER
The Softball Player's Prayer
God Grant me wisdom,
to tell a strike from a ball,
to know where to throw,
and never to fall.
Keep me always in the baseline,
running straight and true,
and I'll look for your sign
and stretch one into two.
God give me vision to,
see every pitch,
so if a player needs help,
I will see which.
Let me always hustle,
so I'll be at my best,
and take pride in myself
in sports and the rest.
God be my strength
when I throw the ball
when I'm far from home plate,
or against a wall.
So I never miss a base,
please guide my feet,
bring me home safely,
So my job is complete.
When I help a younger player,
help me always give praise,
so they will see you in me,
in all of my ways.
God please guide our coach,t
o be fair and smart,
to teach us to be good,
let it come from her heart.
Let me take a loss,
just as well as a win.
to do any less is surely a sin.
As long a I can play,
let me make my parent proud,
as proud as I am,
when they yell my name out loud.
However, my games end,
let me have fun
and if heaven has All-Stars,
I want to be one.
When my games here are over
and my seasons are done,
let me play on your team,
just like your son.
Amen

WHAT SOFTBALL IS ALL ABOUT
The game I play
Softball is the game I play
I love to play it any day
I hit the ball it went "Ka Boom"
it felt like it may go to the moon
I ran like lightning to the base
You should have seen that pitcher's face
I flew like a bird
I made it to third
I started to run....will I make it home?
I was like a dog running for a bone
I slid into the base
I looked at the ump's face
then he said "safe!"

Poem 1
The batting practice and ground balls, the pops and line drives,
all this is just practice, just another day in our lives.
Early morning wake up's, breakfast on the go,
Short shorts, sliders and tank tops,
it's not like we're in a fashion show.
Double headers and late night games, weekend tournaments, and practice in between, players, team-mates and best friends,
for some people softball never ends.
It's the winning hit,
it's the ground ball saving dive,
and playing with all your heart, which keeps the love of the game alive.
The hard to catch fly ball, and the third strike call,
it's all part of the game, a game which you have to give it your all.
In this unpredictable game of softball, the game which we respect, play and love,
anything goes, dropped balls and strike outs
and all that I have mentioned above.
- Arielle
Poem 2
More than a sport, more like a passion,
red dirt and bruises are in fashion,
the wind up, the pitch, scrambling defense, this is what softball is all about,
intense parents in the stands,
anxious coaches waving their hands,
the swing of the bat,
making contact,
this is what softball is all about,
the bat, the ball, the bases, the glove,
this is softball, the game that I love.

Poem 3
Softball tans and scars and bruises.
This is the life that one chooses.
When they step up with that bat in their hand.
Getting ready to hit everything that they can.
Everyone will remember the great catches.
The huge expenses. The look of joy upon the faces.
As the girls they round the bases.
Softball is all they know.
It isn't just for the show.
The love it with all their heart.
Wouldn't give it up from the start.
The sound of a ball hitting leather.
Lightens every girl's heart to the weight of a feather.
For the love of the game.
For the cheers of the crowd.
Every girl wonders and they gather around.
Join in the cheers.
Surrounded by peers.It's every girl's dream .....
Be Proud of Softball.

Softball player’s destiny
Practicing throws and ground balls, line drives, pop flies, for some it's just another day in there lives.
But not for me and my team,
we live for the early morning wake up's, the shell station breakfast, sliders, long shorts and razor backs, it's an all summer thing.
Tournaments every weekend, practice everyday,
your teammates are you best friends and together you will stay.
To real softball players the season never ends,
it's just a longer wait till the next game begins.
We live for the farmer tans the scars and the bruises.
The field is our home, the place where we always want to be.
The bat in our hands ,
the fans in the stands,
our eyes focused on the coaches plans.
That is a true softball players destiny.

The softball girl
The Softball girl peeks out her bedroom window
It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day
Front doors open up, and ghgcome out
Each laughing and jumping ready to play.
But the softball girl closes her window
and turns to check her gear
Jersey, hat, sliders, socks and shorts.
Yep everything is here.
As she comes down the stairs, mom is packing snacks.
her dad is packing up the car.
Today's game is a doubleheaderand the field is pretty far.
As they drive down the streetshe waves to her friends
She isn't sad or envious
Because soon the game will begin.
As they pull up to the field
She spots the girls from her team
The kids back home are good friends
But her teammates are her second family.
They stretch out and run their laps.
And now they focus their minds
for months they've practiced all the drills.
Now it's time for them to shine
They line up their helmets and stack their bats
From the bench they study the other team.
The girls aren't thinking evil hateful thoughts.
Instead it is respect and anticipation of the game
As each girl digs into the batter's box
To try to hit the pitcher's best
They give it everything they have
The situations in the game challenge them,
but they pass every test.
The shortstop dives and snares a drive
and throws the runner out from her knees.
Everyone cheers and claps their hands.
A forgotten fact the shortstop just turned 10 last week.
The game is done and the teams lineup
To shake each others hand
Heart felt praise is exchanged between them.
Two dozen softball girls, each who should be proud of what they have accomplished this day.
Who won the game, what was the score?
It really shouldn't matter.
If that were the only reason they played
nothing could be sadder.
The softball girls has set the goals.
That she wants to achieive
her dedication and commitment
will allow her to succeed.
No matter what path she takes in life
She will remember the "life lessons" that softball taught
No one will ever tell her she can't do something.
She has learned what it takes to succeed and theses things will never be forgotten.
As they turn down her stree
the softball girl waves to her friends
She smiles and feels joy in her heart
As she goes outside to play with them, she sighs "What a perfect way for the day to end."
After all last week she just turned 10.

WILL AND ATTITUDE
A softball player's poem
Patience is a women's greatest virtue, or so the saying goes.
A softball player must have said it, for a softball player knows,
that in this funny sport of ours, discouragement runs high,
and at times the very best will find, this virtue's passed us by.
When knees are cut from sliding, when every muscle's sore.
Can a softball player still have patience, to limp on the field for more?
When you've lost games you should've won, and progress seems so slow.
Can you have faith in better days? and not feel sad and low?
Can you admitt you're frightened? yet not give into fear?
Can you conquer pain, frustration, and often even tears?
When someone else does something, you've tried so long to do.
Can you really be happy for them? or pity just for you?
And when success seems far away, you're efforts all in vein.
Can you force yourself to smile, and disregard the pain?
And if despite the tribulations, you can say "I won't give in".
Then maybe some day you'll discover, that now's your time to win.
- Arielle, Youth Softball Player
its all in the mind
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch you won't.
If you think you'll loose, you've lost.
For out of the world we find, success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed, you are.
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself, before you can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go, to the stronger or faster man,
but sooner or later the man who wins, is the one who thinks he can.
- Unknown Player, Church Point High Lady Bears
Just a little girl
She stands at home plate with her heart pounding fast.
The bases are loaded, the die has been cast.
Mom and Dad cannot help her,
she stands all alone,
a hit at this moment would send her team home.
The ball nears the plate,
she swings and misses,
there's a groan from the crowd with some boos and hisses.
A thoughtless voice cries, "Strike out the bum!"
Tears fill her eyes, the game's no longer fun.
Remember, she is just a little girl who stands all alone.
So open your heart and give her a break,
for it's moments like this a woman you can make.
Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget,
she's just a little girl and not a woman yet.
